The Ford Cologne EV Center

On June 12th, 2023, Ford opened the Cologne Electric vehicle center, a production facility in Germany dedicated to manufacturing electric vehicles in Europe. Ford has invested 2 million dollars into building the historic plant in Niehl, Cologne, allowing these electric vehicles to be built efficiently and with reduced carbon emissions. What is the Cologne EV Center?

For 90 years, Ford has produced over 18 million cars to create the greatest driving experience for millions of drivers. Year after year, the innovations when it comes to Cologne power plants have grown regarding the digital advancements that connect machines, vehicles, and workers, while not superseding human excellence. 

The Ford Cologne EV center is a state-of-the-art production line complete with the latest in tooling, automation, and battery assembly, creating a staggering 250,000 electric vehicles annually. The EV center manufactures vehicles such as the Mustang Mach-E, E-Transit, and F-150 Lightning. Coming soon, Ford will unveil the electric Explorer, the fourth Ford EV and the first to be produced in Cologne. 

The Vision of the Ford Cologne EV Center

What is the aim of creating the Cologne EV center? The goal is to create one of the most fuel-efficient vehicle manufacturers in the world, moving towards carbon neutrality and reducing carbon emissions by 2035. 

To achieve carbon neutrality, Ford will reduce the use of energy and emissions in the plant by the installation of new processes, machinery, and technologies, moving towards carbon-neutral electricity and natural gases. In addition, the heat required to warm the facility and processes is carbon neutral, and the heat is generated by an external power plant and waste incineration plant.

"Opening the Cologne EV Center is the start of a new generation of clean manufacturing and electric vehicles in Europe," said Bill Ford, Executive Chair. "This facility will now be one of the most efficient and environmentally responsible plants in the entire industry. I am thrilled to continue working toward a zero emissions future for our children and grandchildren."
