First Generation Ford Bronco: 1966-1977

When Grand Island drivers see a classic Ford Bronco, they know they are looking at one of the most iconic vehicles on the road today. Here is the scoop on some of the early Ford Bronco history:

  • The classic Ford Bronco was designed as a passenger-friendly off-road vehicle with a unique chassis.
  • All models initially included standard four-wheel drive.
  • The early Ford Bronco engine was a 105-hp inline-6, similar to that in the Ford Falcon.
  • Second Generation Ford Bronco: 1978-1980

There were some significant changes in the second generation of the Ford Bronco:

    • Replaced the original Bronco chassis with one adapted from the Ford F-Series
    • Extended the wheelbase by 12 inches
    • Abandoned the multiple body configurations of the first generation - the second-generation Ford Bronco was offered only as a three-door wagon
    • Third Generation Ford Bronco: 1980-1986

The third generation Ford Bronco was smaller and lighter than the second generation Bronco but otherwise similar. Just three years after the debut of the third generation Ford Bronco, Ford introduced the Bronco II, which was the beginning of a unique line. It was more similar to the early Ford Bronco and was developed in conjunction with the 1983 Ford Ranger, adapting one of its engines. The Bronco II would eventually become the Ford Explorer.

      Fourth Generation Ford Bronco: 1987-1991

This generation received a variety of interior and exterior updates. Lockport Bronco fans were excited about the Silver Anniversary Edition, which was the very first Ford Bronco available with leather seating.

      Fifth Generation Ford Bronco: 1992-1996

The fifth-generation Ford Bronco included more modern interior updates and significant changes to safety features and trim levels. It also discontinued the classic Ford Bronco removable hard-top.

Sixth Generation Ford Bronco: 2021 to Present

In its sixth generation, the current Ford Bronco goes back to its roots as a mid-size SUV with traditional body-on-frame construction and independent suspension. It also re-introduced the classic detachable roof, thrilling Bronco fans! Now you can even remove the side doors for an open-air touring experience. Ford also debuted the Ford Bronco Sport, a more compact four-door variety of the same model.
